Description

On the night Ardena is crowned Luna to Alpha Rhys, a masked intruder shatters the ceremony-and her wolf screams mate. Captured rebel Kieran claims Ironvale massacred his Bloodfang tribe and that Ardena is their stolen child. Torn between duty and a bond she can't deny, Ardena frees Kieran and flees into Nightshade territory, where truth, first shift, and forbidden love ignite. As Rhys's ruthless second Ashrock stages a coup, a hidden journal exposes the genocide that built Ironvale's power. Ardena and Kieran rally allies, topple Ashrock, and reclaim Bloodfang lands. With justice done and a child on the way, they begin rebuilding under a new moon.

Ardena's POV

The main hall blazes with firelight and gold. Every torch burns, every candle flickers, casting shadows across stone walls that have stood for centuries. The Ironvale Pack fills the space, hundreds of bodies pressed together, their anticipation thick enough to taste. Warriors line the perimeter in ceremonial armor. Families cluster near the front. Elders occupy the raised platforms, their faces carved with authority.

I stand at the altar beside Rhys, my hands clasped in front of me, my breathing measured. The traditional white cloak drapes from my shoulders, heavy with embroidered silver thread. Luna. I'm about to become Luna.

"You look pale," Rhys murmurs, his voice low enough that only I hear.

"I'm fine," I say, forcing steadiness into my tone.

"Nerves?"

"Maybe."

He turns his head slightly, his gray eyes finding mine. "It's normal. Once the vows are complete, you'll feel different. The bond will settle everything."

I nod, though the unease in my chest tightens. It's not fear exactly. More like something unfinished. I've trained for this. Years of preparation, discipline, lessons in leadership and pack politics. I know what's expected of me. Still, my heartbeat refuses to settle.

Elder Maren steps forward, her weathered face solemn. She raises both hands, and the crowd falls silent. The chanting begins, old words in a language most don't understand anymore. But the meaning carries through tone alone. Unity. Strength. Blood and bone.

Rhys speaks first. "I, Rhys of the Ironvale Tribe, Alpha of Ironvale, take you as Luna. I bind myself to you, to protect, to lead, to honor."

His voice doesn't waver. It never does. He was born for this, raised to stand exactly where he is now. I've always admired that about him. The certainty.

Elder Maren turns to me, her dark eyes expectant. "Ardena of the Ironvale Tribe, speak your vows."

I inhale, drawing air deep into my lungs. "I, Ardena of the Ironvale Tribe, take you as my Alpha. I bind myself to you, to serve, to stand beside you, to honor."

The words leave my mouth cleanly. No hesitation. No cracks. Perfect, as I've practiced them to be.

Elder Maren takes our hands, her skin papery and cool. She places mine over Rhys's. "By the Moon Goddess, I declare you Alpha and Luna. May your union bring prosperity to Ironvale."

The moment our hands touch, something surges through me. Sharp. Wild. Alive. My breath catches, my wolf stirring fully. A voice whispers deep inside, clear as glass breaking.

Mate.

Relief floods me so quickly my knees nearly buckle. Finally. The bond has taken. All the worry, the endless nights wondering if I was enough for him, if the Goddess would approve this match, if I could truly be what Ironvale needed, it was for nothing. The tension drains from my shoulders. I ease up, allowing myself to breathe fully for the first time in days.

Then the doors explode inward.

Wood splinters. Metal hinges shriek. Smoke pours into the hall in thick gray waves that swallow the nearest rows of spectators. Screams erupt. Bodies surge backward, shoving against each other in blind panic. Children wail. Warriors shout commands that get lost in the chaos.

Through the haze, a figure strides forward. Masked. Black leather and bone plates, a hood casting deep shadows across his face. He moves with purpose, each step calculated, predatory. Two guards rush him immediately, weapons drawn. He doesn't slow. He moves like water, sidestepping the first guard's lunge, catching the second by the wrist and twisting until bone audibly cracks. Both men collapse. He doesn't kill them. Just disables them with brutal, efficient precision.

"What the hell is this?" Rhys roars, his Alpha command rippling outward in waves of raw authority.

No one answers. No one can. The crowd fractures into complete chaos. Wolves half-shift, claws extending, teeth bared, eyes flashing gold and amber. Children cry. Elders shout orders that dissolve into meaningless noise.

The masked man climbs onto the altar itself, his movements sharp and deliberate. He's tall, lean but muscular beneath the dark clothing, his presence cutting through the panic like a blade through flesh.

"You call this unity?" His voice echoes, distorted and cold. "You celebrate while others rot under your rule. You bind yourselves in gold while blood stains your hands."

"Seize him!" Rhys commands, stepping forward, his body tense with controlled rage.

More guards move in from all sides. The man reaches into his coat with one smooth motion and throws something into the air. It bursts in white smoke, blinding and loud, a crack that makes my ears ring. I shield my eyes, coughing, my vision swimming with tears.

Through the haze, he turns his head.

Our gazes meet.

Time fractures. My wolf screams the word again, louder, desperate, frantic.

Mate.

No. That's not possible. I just bonded with Rhys. I felt it. The connection formed, the vows spoken. But this, this is different. Stronger. Undeniable. Absolute. My pulse stumbles, my breath gone. Every nerve in my body locks onto him like I'm tethered by invisible wire.

Across the chaos, he goes still too. Completely motionless. I can't see his face clearly through the mask and smoke, but I feel it. Recognition. Understanding. The same pull, the same impossible connection burning between us like wildfire.

"Ardena!" Rhys grabs my arm, his grip firm, steadying me before I collapse. "Are you hurt?"

I can't answer. Can't form words. Can't move.

The masked man leaps from the altar to the upper balcony in one fluid motion. Glass shatters as he crashes through the window and disappears into the night beyond.

The smoke begins to clear. The crowd stands frozen, trembling, shocked into silence. Rhys's hand tightens on my arm, his confusion hardening into cold, focused anger.

"What just happened?" he demands, his voice low and dangerous.

I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. The hall spins. The bond still hums in my chest, a second heartbeat that doesn't belong to the man standing beside me. It pulses with every breath, foreign and insistent.

"Ardena," Rhys says again, his voice sharpening like steel on stone. "Answer me."

But I can't. Because the truth is forming in my mind, terrible and absolute.

My mate isn't Rhys.

My mate just destroyed our wedding.
