Description
Evelyn Parker turns twenty-one tomorrow, and she is still the only wolfless she-wolf in her pack. Three years ago, rogues stormed the Sterling & Parker anniversary gala on the night of her first shift. Her parents never left the ballroom. Her wolf never came. Now she sorts pack disputes in the legal wing of her father's company twice a week. Half the pack talks to her in that careful voice. Her white dress still hangs in its dry-cleaning bag. She can't wear it, and she can't throw it away. Dominic Sterling is the Alpha. He is the billionaire at the head of the boardroom and her brother's best friend. She has loved him quietly for as long as she can remember. He has never looked at her twice. The company has gone three years without a Luna, and the investors want one polished and ready by spring. So what happens if her wolf finally comes, and the Goddess and the Alpha disagree about who deserves him?

Evelyn's POV
"Tonight you meet your wolf. And perhaps tonight you meet your true mate, dear."
Mom whispers it into my ear over and over tonight, squeezing my hand under the table.
Today is my birthday, I'm finally eighteen, wearing a white ceremonial dress, and the whole Sterling & Parker anniversary gala is glowing around me.
On stage, Dad and Alpha Marcus raise their glasses to twenty years of business and friendship. Dad finds me in the crowd and winks, making something warm stir deep inside me.
That's her. That's my wolf, and she's almost here.
"To family," Alpha Marcus says into the microphone. "And for our company to develop better every year."
Then the windows behind the stage explode. Wolves pour through the doors, huge and fast. They don't scatter like wild animals. They move together, like somebody planned every single step.
"Rogues!" someone screams.
Dad shifts mid-step and throws himself between Alpha Marcus and five snarling wolves.
I can't breathe, I can't move, I can only watch.
"Evie, stay down!" Mom shoves me behind her chair and turns toward the stage.
A gray wolf slams into her side, and she falls to the ground. Her bracelet slides across the marble and stops right against my shoe.
No… No, Mom, get up. Please get up, I can't do this without you.
"Evelyn!" Ethan's arms lock around my waist, and he drags me backward. "Don't look at her! Don't look!"
"Let me go, she's still moving!" I claw at my brother’s arms. "Ethan, please!"
He doesn't let go. He just runs with me in his arms.
I still remember every single moment. My parents died in the rogue attack that day. Ethan saved me. But at what cost?
If he hadn't taken me, maybe our parents would still be alive…
"Hey, Miss? Are you getting in or not?"
A man in a gray suit is holding the elevator door and frowning at me. I'm standing in the compound lobby of Sterling & Parker Cosmetics. On my first day, with badge in my hand, frozen for who knows how long.
Great, Evelyn. Still zoning out in public like a crazy person.
"Sorry." I step inside and press my back into the corner. "Twelve, please."
The doors slide shut, but my head still goes back to that ballroom.
It always gets worse during this time of year. Tomorrow is my birthday, tomorrow I’ll be twenty-one, and tomorrow is also an anniversary.
Three years since the night I lost my parents.
Beta James Parker of Sterling Pack, and his true mate.
This morning I stood in front of my closet and stared at the white dress again. It's still in the dry-cleaning bag, still perfect, and I can't wear it or throw it away.
Because then it would really be over, right?
Then that night would really be the end of them.
I never shifted that night as I was supposed to. I felt her right there inside me, and then Mom hit the floor and my wolf just… disappeared.
She hasn't come back since. I’m still wolfless.
"It's psychological," the pack doctor tells me at every checkup. "Your trauma is probably blocking the first shift. Give it time, Evelyn."
Three years isn't enough time? How much more do you want from me?
But everyone was nice and supportive of me about it all this time.
Except of Victoria, of course.
She never bothered with nice words. This arrogant Ethan’s friend once called me defective at the spring banquet, loud enough for half the table to laugh.
It still stings more than I'll ever admit. Mostly because sometime I think she might be right.
The elevator stops on the fourth floor and two women from accounting step in. They go quiet when they see me, and one gives me that soft, pity smile.
I know what they’re thinking.
Poor wolfless Evelyn, it's her sad week again.
"Morning," I say, because staying silent would be even worse.
"Morning, sweetie." She pats my arm like I'm a lost puppy. "Hang in there, okay?"
‘Hang in there’… Wow, thank you so much. That fixes everything.
I nod and stare at the floor numbers.
Half the pack talks to me in that careful voice now, and the other half just forgot I exist. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the only days I don't feel invisible.
I volunteer at the legal wing of my dad’s company, the same one where the attack took place three years ago. I sort compliance paperwork, pack law disputes, and filings nobody else wants to touch.
At least this way I can be part of the family business
It's the only place my degree means something. The only place somebody actually needs me.
The doors open on twelve, and I step out. I walk past these glass walls every time, and every time I tell myself not to look. But I look anyway.
Alpha Dominic is sitting at the head of the long conference table with his sleeves rolled up. He taps a pen against a folder while four men in suits talk at him.
Don't stare at him. Seriously, Evelyn, don't you dare stare at him.
I stare, of course. I've had a quiet, hopeless crush on him for as long as I can remember, and it never went away.
He's never even looked at you twice. To him you're just the daughter of his late father’s Beta. His best friend’s sad younger sister. Nothing more, nothing less.
I grip my bag strap and walk faster toward the legal wing, where I can hide in my paperwork like always.
"Evelyn?" My heart jumps straight into my throat at his voice behind me.
I turn around, and Dominic is standing in the conference room doorway. All four suits are watching me through the glass.
"Dominic… Hi." My voice comes out way too high.
He studies my face for a long moment without smiling.
"Can you come here for a moment?" He steps aside to let me in. "I have a question for you."
He never asks for me, not once in three years, and now he's holding the door open like he's been waiting.
And I don’t like where it might go.
What possibly could he want from me?
