Description

At ten years old, Layla lost everything - her parents, her name, her memory. The world was told no one survived that crash. But Layla did. Her uncle made sure no one would ever know. He erased her past, destroyed every trace of who she was, and raised her as a servant in his own house. The night she finally runs, she collapses on the grounds of the most powerful estate in the country. The family that takes her in once had deep ties to the dynasty she was born into - they just don't know it yet. Neither does she. Their son Seth was betrothed to someone as a child. A girl who supposedly died eight years ago. He buried that grief, locked it away, and swore he'd never let anyone close again. So when this broken, silent stranger starts triggering memories he thought he'd killed - he pushes her away. She doesn't remember him. He can't forget her. And the man who stole her life will do anything to keep the truth buried.

Layla’s POV

The push comes unexpectedly.

One second I'm on my knees scrubbing the baseboard in the hallway. The next — loss of balance and my palms hit the cold tile. Heat rushes to my face.

My vision blurs for a second before the floor comes into focus beneath me. Elizabeth, my cousin, stands over me, brushing off her hands like pushing me was an inconvenience.

Her nails are fresh — long and painted in red. My boyfriend Leo put a ring on her finger two weeks ago. The same ring he whispered about giving to me, more than once, full of promises he never meant.

"Baby," she says, turning toward the doorway. Her voice goes soft, wounded. "Did you see how she looked at me? Your little secret really needed to learn her place, don't you think?"

Leo leans against the doorframe with his arms crossed. Already in his suit for tonight — charcoal, tailored, expensive.

Uncle Xavier raised Leo alongside Elizabeth and me. Took him in as a boy, made him his protégé for the company.

When the time came to choose, he chose Xavier's real daughter. He chose the name, the inheritance, the path to everything.

I was just the orphan niece who scrubs floors.

Leo’s eyes move from Elizabeth to me. No surprise, just that flat, bored contempt I've learned to recognize over the years.

"Get up," he says, because I'm in the way.

I push myself to my knees. My palms sting, but I don't look at them.

"She's always doing this," Elizabeth says, curling into Leo's side. "Staring at me like she's better. Say something to her!"

Leo wraps his arm around her waist and looks down at me like I'm dirt stuck to the bottom of his shoe.

"You're nothing, Layla." His voice sounds too casual for someone who used to be mine. "You didn't really believe that I'd choose you over her, did you?"

"You told me you would." My voice comes out raw and small. "You said things would change. You said after tonight…"

Leo laughs, short and sharp.

"Wow, you actually believed that?" He looks at Elizabeth. "You hear this? She thought I meant it."

Elizabeth covers her mouth, giggling. "Oh, that's precious."

"I was bored, Layla. You were there. That's all it was." He's still smiling. "Did you seriously think someone like me would end up with the help?"

The help. Not even my name. Was I just a category to him this whole time?

"Leo, please…"

Elizabeth steps forward and pushes me again.

I lose my balance and catch myself on one hand before I go all the way down.

"Don't say his name." She hisses. "You don't get to say his name."

I press my lips shut. My face is burning but I don't make a sound.

This is why you stay quiet. Every time you open your mouth, it gets worse. Every single time.

Elizabeth crouches just enough to get in my face. "What, cat got your tongue?"

A sharp ache pulses behind my eyes. I wince, press my hand to my temple.

The hallway tilts, and then I'm not here anymore.

I'm in that car, years ago. My mother turning back to smile at me. My father's hands on the wheel — or was someone else driving?

The wheel jerks. The world tilts, and then there's water — freezing, black water everywhere. My mother calling my name. My father pushing me toward the window. Neither of them can get free.

Then everything goes dark.

Her sharp voice rips me back to the hallway.

Elizabeth is standing over me again. "Quit the act. Nobody here feels sorry for you."

That crash was eight years ago. After it Elizabeth’s father, Uncle Xavier, took me in. But my memory keeps taking me back to that day and making me wonder — why was I the only one who got out?

Elizabeth straightens up, loops her arm through Leo's. "Babe, the wedding planner is calling at three."

"Go ahead," Leo says. "I'll catch up in a minute."

Elizabeth walks away, her heels click down the corridor and fade. But Leo doesn't move.

I keep my eyes on the floor. Just the two of us now, no witnesses. Which means he doesn't have to perform. And Leo without an audience is Leo at his cruelest.

"Your parents were nobody," Uncle Xavier told me, standing over my hospital bed. "I'm giving you a roof, work and purpose. You should be grateful I don't throw you out on the street."

He said it that first day. And every day after for eight years. The head trauma took most of my memories, but Xavier filled in the blanks.

My parents were nobody. And I'm lucky to be alive.

I fell in love with Leo when we were just teens. A few months ago, after I turned eighteen, I finally confessed to him, and it turned out to be mutual. He said he had feelings for me too. He wanted me to be his. Only his.

Which meant our relationship was never public, never official. Always in secret, and always on his terms

I guess he was a bit ashamed of me. A girl not even close to his level. The help.

But I couldn’t care less. I was his and that was enough.

For months, I let myself believe he was just trying to figure things out. How to openly be together with someone like me without backlash, given his status and the future he had ahead.

I believed that once everything with business settled, he’d announce us. Believed that tonight would change things.

Instead, he brought Elizabeth downstairs this morning and kissed her in front of the entire staff. In front of me.

I reach for the rag and Leo crouches beside me, taking my chin to turn my face toward him.

"You think this is bad?" he says quietly. His thumb presses into my jaw hard. "After the guests leave tonight, you and I are going to have a private conversation."

His eyes stay locked on mine, cold and patient, making sure I understand.

"And if you say a word to anyone, I'll tell Xavier you stole from the house. You know what happens to thieves with no family and no name?"

He stands, wipes his hand on his pants like he touched something dirty.

"Be grateful we still keep you around at all."

He walks away. His shoes click against the tile, steady and unhurried.

I stay on the floor. The rag drips between my fingers. My hands are shaking but I squeeze until they stop.

I endured all kinds of humiliation for 8 years, but this one… It’s different.

I drop the rag into the bucket and stand.

I need to leave before he finds a way to make my life even worse.
