Description
Maeve Vale has been in love with Alpha Ryan Ashford since she was fifteen. She has never said it out loud. He is twenty-five, her brother's best friend, and the most powerful wolf in Silvercrest. She is the orphaned Beta's daughter who trains alone because nobody thinks she's worth the time. The night she turns eighteen, her wolf wakes up white - pure, glowing, the first in generations. A prophecy wolf. And the mate bond pulls her straight to Ryan. He is her fated mate. He was also planning to reject her before she ever walked down those stairs. Maeve heard every word. She is not the girl who cries in her room and waits. She is the girl who walks into his study at one in the morning and tells him she'll reject him first - publicly, at the Moon Ceremony, in front of every wolf in the pack. But when a rival Alpha arrives with an ancient claiming law and his eyes on the white wolf, rejection stops being a power move and starts being a trap. Her brother picks Ryan's side. Her best friend offers to lie for her. And the boy she's loved since fifteen is looking at her like he's seeing her for the first time.

Maeve's POV
Run. Don't look back. Run.
My brother’s arms are around me. I'm ten years old and Callum carrying me through the dark. His body shakes with every step, while smoke fills the air.
The trees are orange now. Wolves around us are screaming, not howling, and I can hear the sounds of fighting behind us.
"Don't look back, Maeve." Brother’s voice cracks. "Don't look…"
How can I not look?
A woman is lying in the dirt behind us. Her hair is dark, spread across the ground. Her arm reaches toward something I can't see.
I know that arm. I know that ring on her finger.
That's Mom.
That's my mommy lying in the dirt.
Please no, somebody help her…
Her eyes find mine. She's still alive. Her mouth moves but no sound comes out — just her lips shaping the last words.
‘I love you’. Over and over.
No. No, no, no. Get up. Please get up, Mommy! Please!
I wake up with my heart slamming against my ribs.
Open my mouth to scream, but nothing comes out. My hands are shaking so hard I have to press them flat on the mattress.
It takes a full ten seconds to remember where I am — my room, my bed, the blue curtains Callum hung when I was twelve.
You're okay.
You're home.
She's been gone eight years.
Breathe.
The nightmare always comes back around this time of year. Eight years since the rogue attack that killed our parents.
Dad was Beta — died protecting the Alpha family. Mom died beside him. Callum was seventeen and he’s the one who carried me out of that fire.
He's been carrying me ever since. Even when he became Beta himself.
I count my breaths until my hands stop shaking.
Tomorrow you turn eighteen. Tomorrow you get your wolf. Not this. Not the same stupid dream you've had a thousand times.
The smell of eggs floats up from the kitchen. Callum is already cooking. I pull on a hoodie, then sweats and head downstairs.
He's at the stove with a spatula in one hand and his phone in the other. He looks up when I walk in, and his whole face shifts.
Of course he knows.
"The nightmare again?" He sets the spatula down.
I just nod, don't trust my voice yet.
Don't cry. He'll worry all day if you cry.
He crosses the kitchen in two steps and pulls me into a hug. I press my face against his chest and breathe him in. Coffee and laundry soap, the same smell that's meant safe since I was ten.
"Mom and Dad would've wanted to be here tomorrow for you," he says quietly against the top of my head.
Don't. Please don't say things like that when I'm already shaking.
My throat tightens and I grip his shirt and hold on. He doesn't let go until I do. That's the rule — it's always been the rule.
"Come on." He lets go and steers me toward the table. "Sit. I made omelets."
He slides a plate in front of me and pours juice. I pick up my fork. The sun hits the counter and for a second everything feels normal again.
"So." He leans back in his chair. "Last day as my wolfless little sister."
"Don't start." I stab the omelet with my fork.
Here comes the speech.
"I'm just saying — tomorrow is going to change everything." He grins. "You'll hear your wolf for the first time. You'll be able to mind-link the pack. You'll run with us."
Something already stirred inside me last night for the first time actually. A warmth, a presence, like a hand pressed against the inside of my chest.
I haven't told anyone about it yet.
Every time I think about tomorrow, that warmth pulses like it's listening.
"Did you pick your witnesses?" Callum asks.
"You, Irys, Beth, and Jace. I don't think you expected anything else from my list."
Just the Luna of the pack, my best friend and my almost-boyfriend. Nothing special.
"Yeah, I’m not surprised. But that’s a good list. You will need the most reliable people." He takes a bite. "Irys has been asking about you all week. She's more excited than you are."
That sounds like Irys.
She's Alpha Ryan's mother — lost her mate, the former Alpha of our pack, the same night we lost our parents. She struggled through her loss badly, but survived and stayed on as Luna until her son will find one of his own.
She also practically became a mother to me since mine was gone.
"And Jace…" Callum's voice shifts. "Maybe he'll turn out to be your mate tomorrow."
Don't blush. Do not blush. Do not give him a reason to tease you.
"Maybe." I keep my eyes on the plate.
"I wouldn't hate it, though," he says. "He's a good fighter. He's kind, pretty smart. And he looks at you like you hung the moon."
Oh Jace… My tall, dark-haired and warm angel-guardian. He’s my friend and teaches me combat moves on the side because nobody else thinks I'm worth training. He kisses my cheek every morning and calls me beautiful like it costs him nothing.
I like him. I really do.
We agreed we can try to date, but nothing serious until we know for sure whether he's my mate.
Tomorrow answers that question.
But when I close my eyes to picture my mate, the face that shows up isn't his. It's Alpha Ryan's.
Goddess, stop it. You’re a hopeless little mess.
I shove the thought about my secret crush down so hard my fork scrapes the plate. He's the Alpha. He's twenty-five and he’s Callum's best friend.
So there’s at least three reasons NOT TO EVEN THINK ABOUT HIM.
Can you hear me, Maeve?
Absolutely no chances.
I've had these stupid, quiet feelings for as long as I can remember, our families always were close. And will take it to my grave before I ever say it out loud.
The warmth inside my chest hums like it agrees with me. Like it already knows something I don't.
Great. Even my wolf thinks I'm an idiot.
"Maeve?" Callum tilts his head. "You good?"
"Yeah." I shove eggs into my mouth. "Just hungry."
A knock at the front door cuts through the kitchen. Callum pushes his chair back and walks to the hallway — a patrol wolf with a report about border activity.
"I'll be ten minutes," Callum calls over his shoulder.
The front door shuts behind him and then I'm alone in the kitchen. And I'm smiling without meaning to.
Tomorrow I finally meet my wolf.
Tomorrow everything changes.
Please let it be good. Please let tomorrow be the start of something good.
Suddenly I hear the back door open behind me.
"Well." The voice is sweet and sharp at the same time. "If it isn't the little runt."
My smile dies. My fingers tighten around my fork.
Amber.
Callum just left and she waited until he was gone. She always waits until he's gone to hurt me.
Here we go again…
