Description
Kelly Wilkins has three rules for her training year at Iron Peak. Work hard. Don't embarrass the family. Stay far away from the Alpha. Rule three is getting difficult. Asher Strom is six-foot-three, famously cold, and already marked to a Luna the entire pack adores. He's also her fated mate, which is extremely inconvenient for both of them. He says the bond changes nothing. He says it while standing too close in the pack house kitchen. He says it with his wolf growling every time another male looks at her. Kelly has a year to finish and a mother waiting for her to fail. She has a birthday that's still three months away, and a silver wolf that clearly didn't get the memo. And the Alpha who rejected her can't seem to stop finding reasons to be in the same room.

[Kelly’s POV]
"Don't even dare to come back home if you fail."
That's the last thing my mother says to me before I leave home. Not ‘good luck.’ Not ‘I'll miss you.’ Just that.
Thank you, Mother. I definitely feel the love now.
I keep hearing these words in my head the whole way to Iron Peak pack. Over and over, like she's carved it into my skull.
This is my training year, and Iron Peak is the strongest pack in the region. My parents are sure I'll fail. They always say I'm too small and too weak, and my wolf will be the weakest in Greymist.
But I still hope for a strong wolf. Just once, I want them to look at me and see something worth keeping.
The pack house is enormous when I finally arrive. Stone and dark wood, three stories high, wolves everywhere.
My home pack Greymist has maybe forty members total. This is a completely different world.
We file into the main hall with the other transfers. Pack members line the walls. I keep my eyes forward and my hands tight on my bag. I cannot fail. I need to do everything right.
Then the Alpha walks in, and every anxious thought evaporates.
Oh, dear Goddess… He's tall. Really tall. Dark hair cut short and a sharp jaw. Brown eyes that scan the room. He moves as if everything around him belongs to him.
Because it does.
Behind him is a woman. Blonde and beautiful, perfect posture. Looks like his Luna. I've heard about her too—Sybil Cross, daughter of Iron Peak's former head warrior.
He walks down the line. Each transfer gets a nod, a word.
"Name?" he says to the girl beside me.
"Emma. From Ashwood pack, Alpha," she answers sheepishly.
"Welcome." He nods. "You're assigned to patrol support. Next."
Then he steps in front of me, and at that exact moment my bag strap slips off my shoulder.
It yanks me off balance and I fall right into his chest.
His hand closes around my elbow. It's warm and steady, and the second his skin touches mine, a jolt runs up my arm. My whole body lights up, from my scalp to my toes.
What was that? What the hell was that?
"Careful," he says.
"Sorry… I'm Kelly. Kelly Wilkins." The words come out too fast, too loud. "From Greymist pack."
But he's already moving to the next person. That's it. He doesn't look back. I'm nobody to him. Just another clumsy transfer girl.
Didn't even get a nod. Of course.
I just stand there with my face burning and tell myself it doesn't matter. It doesn't.
After the welcome, we're sent to the healer's house to be looked over. The pack healer is a woman named Nessa—dark curly hair, kind eyes, and a mouth that says exactly what it's thinking.
"Greymist?" she says, reading my scrolls. "That's a long way from here."
"Not that far," I say, shrugging.
"It is if you've never left before." She looks up at me. "First time away from home?" I nod. "Nervous?"
"A little." A lot. Like, throw-up-in-your-sink a lot.
"Good. The ones who say they're not nervous always cry first." She smiles. "You'll be just fine, dear."
She checks my pulse, looks at my eyes, and asks if I've ever been sick.. But she actually talks to me while she does it. Like I'm a person, not a number in a line.
"So. Birthday coming up?" she asks.
"Three months." I can't help the smile. "I'll be eighteen."
"Excited to shift for the first time?" She smiles warmly.
"More than anything." Like you can't even imagine. My wolf will be the first thing that's truly mine. After the shift, maybe I won't be the weak girl anymore.
She raises an eyebrow. "That's a lot of weight to put on one night."
"It's not just the shift," I say, my voice dropping. "I've been waiting my whole life for that."
For him. Whoever he is.
Somewhere out there is my true mate. Someone made just for me, who will actually want me around.
When my wolf comes out, I'll know him, and I'll finally belong somewhere.
It's the one dream that keeps me going. Through every time my parents look at me like I'm a bill that never stops coming due.
Nessa watches me for a moment. Something soft moves across her face.
"What about your family?" she asks. "Are they supportive of you being here?"
I still for a second. Take a deep breath in. "They're fine."
"Fine," she repeats.
"They want me to do well. My mother made it clear this year is my one shot. If I don't come back with something to show for it, I shouldn't come back at all."
"She said that to you?" Nessa's eyebrow comes up.
"She meant it."
Nessa doesn't push. But I see her write something in her book.
She presses two fingers to my wrist again. Then she stops. Her hand stays on my arm, but her eyes go distant. Like she's reading something on me that I can't see.
"What?" I ask. "Something’s wrong?"
She blinks and pulls her hand back. "Nothing. You're all clear, dear." She closes her book. "Get some rest tonight, Kelly. Big day tomorrow."
I nod, thank her, and go to my room.
Three months. That's all I have to wait until my first shift.
I'm already in bed when the pain hits.
It comes out of nowhere. Like someone reaches inside my chest and squeezes. My spine arches off the mattress and a scream tears out of me.
Then the bones start reshaping.
My fingers twist. My shoulders crack apart and reform. My skin burns, stretches, splits—and I can feel something underneath pushing through.
Something alive. Something that's been waiting.
No. No, this is impossible. It’s not my birthday yet. This can't be happening!
But it is. Three months too early, my first shift is happening right now.
