Description
She lost everything in one night, her fiance, her sister, her pack, and her mother's necklace. The only thing a stranger at a bar left her with was a scent she can't forget and three children she's raising alone. Six years later, Theia Whitmore is broke, packless, and out of options. When her father falls critically ill, she's forced back to the territory that destroyed her, and into a job at Ashfeld Corp, run by the Alpha's family. Nico Ashfeld is warm, charming, and the first man in years who treats her like she matters. His older brother Kael is the opposite - controlled, distant and engaged to another woman. But every time he's near, Theia's wolf reacts in ways she can't explain, and his scent stirs a memory she buried six years ago. Someone in the building knows who she is. Someone returned the necklace she lost that night. And someone is watching her children with eyes that match her son's. The stranger never left. He's been here all along.

[Theia’s POV]
Twelve hours ago, I was steaming my ceremony white dress.
I stood in front of the mirror and practiced saying ‘I accept you as my chosen mate’ until my cheeks hurt from smiling.
Then I went to surprise my fiancé Grant. But I heard her whimpers before I saw anything through the door.
“I love you, Grant. I missed you so much. Please… leave her. Let me be yours!”
Tessa.
My own younger sister was in my mate's bed, in his arms. The night before my mating ceremony. Begging him to leave me.
Now the glass in my hand is empty again.
I don't remember finishing it. I don't remember ordering it either. I've been sitting on this stool long enough that the bartender has stopped asking if I'm okay.
My fingers find my mother's crescent pendant. It's the only thing I grabbed before I ran away. The only thing that still feels like mine.
Someone sits down beside me, but I don't have the strength to look. Yet his scent reaches me anyway.
Cedar. Smoke. Something wild beneath it, like a forest after a storm.
My wolf finally lifts her head. That got her attention.
She's been silent all day. Curled up somewhere deep in my chest, hurting. Now she's awake and pressing forward, and I hate her for it.
‘Don't,’ I tell her. ‘We're done with that. No more werewolf males.’
"Rough day?" The man’s voice beside me is low and unhurried.
"Why would you want to know how I am doing?"
"I asked," he says simply.
I laugh and it comes out cracked when I finally turn my head. The light is too dim to see him properly. But I notice the broad shoulders under a dark shirt. The sharp line of a jaw. A mouth that looks like it doesn't smile often.
And his eyes are entirely on me.
I can't see their color, can’t focus my vision at the moment, but I can feel them. Taking me in like he has all the time in the world.
"Tomorrow was supposed to be my mating ceremony," I tell him, my voice wobbles. I don't mean to. The words just come, like something inside me has split open. "But I found him in bed with my sister. How’s that for a day?"
He says nothing.
Just waits for me to continue while I fight the burn in my throat.
"And after I ran, he just came outside with her. In front of the whole pack. Everyone was already gathering for the ceremony prep…" I swallow hard. "Then he looked me in the eye and said the rejection’s words."
‘You were never the one. You were never enough.’
The words still slice over my heart.
"Do you know what a rejection feels like?" I whisper. "It's like someone reaching into your chest and ripping out the only thing that was holding you together."
A glass of water slides in front of me.
"Drink," he says.
"I didn't order that."
"Drink. You need that right now," he insists.
There's no pity in his voice. That's the only reason I obey. I drink half and set it down too hard, and water spills over my fingers.
"She's my sister," I say, and that's the part that finally breaks me. Not Grant. Tessa. "I would have died for her."
The stool tilts, so does the world, but his hand closes around my arm before I fall. Warm and firm.
"Steady," he murmurs.
That one word undoes whatever was left of me.
I press my forehead into his shoulder and cry. Ugly, shaking, silent sobs I've been swallowing all day. He doesn't pull away. His breathing stays slow and even, like an anchor.
When I finally lift my head, we're close. Too close.
His breath touches my lips. He inhales slowly, like he's breathing me in, my scent. Something rumbles in his chest then, low, almost a growl, and my wolf howls back.
"Don't let me be alone tonight…" I whisper. "Please."
He goes very still. I feel the fight in him, every muscle locked tight.
"You've been drinking," he says, rough. "And you're hurting."
"I know."
"Tell me you're sure then."
"I'm not sure of anything anymore." My fingers curl into his shirt. "Except that I don't want to go back to an empty room and hear their voices all night. I want to feel… something else. Anything else."
His jaw flexes. He pushes the water back toward me and waits, patient as stone, until I finish every drop. Then he stands and holds out his hand. I take it.
His hands are framing my face before the motel door closes. When his mouth finally meets mine, it's slow, deep and devastating. Nothing like Grant ever kissed me.
He touches me like I'm something worth learning. Every brush of his fingers is careful, deliberate, as if he's memorizing me.
"Stay," I breathe against his neck.
"I'm here," he says. "I've got you."
No names. No past. No pack. Just his heat and his weight and the storm in my head finally going quiet.
Somewhere in the dark, my wolf sighs a single word I refuse to hear.
When I wake, the sheets beside me are cold. Only the ghost of cedar lingers on the pillow.
He's gone. Of course.
And I don't wait for him to come back. I already wasted years waiting for a man who never wanted me.

Two months later
The fluorescent light in the clinic bathroom buzzes over me while I watch the second line bleed into view. My knees give out and I catch the sink before I hit the floor.
Positive. I’m… pregnant.
No pack. No money. No standing. And a stranger's child, conceived the same night my ex-mate threw me away.
If I stay, they'll count the weeks. They'll call me a desperate reject who crawled into the first bed she found. And they'll drag my father down with me. Dad is barely surviving in the lower pack as it is.
No, I won't let my wreckage bury him.
I'm keeping this baby. And I'm disappearing.
No one will ever know who the father is. Or so I thought.
